Building Better Teams - Ryan Woodruff’s Mission with Rhino Consulting and Coaching

After more than three decades in leadership, Ryan Woodruff understands what drives healthy teams and what causes them to fall apart. He’s led departments at major banks, retail chains, and credit unions, weathering acquisitions, closures, and culture shifts. But through it all, one truth kept rising to the surface: strong leadership starts with understanding people.

That belief became the foundation for Rhino Consulting and Coaching, the Mishawaka-based business Ryan launched after walking away from his final corporate role.

“I’m a 30-year corporate burnout,” he says with a laugh. “But really, I just got tired of watching great people leave companies because they were in the wrong seat, or had the wrong leader, or weren’t being supported the way they needed.”

At Rhino Consulting and Coaching, Ryan focuses on team building and employee development, partnering with small and mid-sized businesses across the region to help them work better from the inside out. Whether he’s leading a DISC assessment workshop or coaching an executive one-on-one, his goal is simple: make people’s work lives healthier, more productive, and more aligned with who they are.

From Leadership Veteran to Business Owner

Ryan’s leadership journey began young. While still in high school, he worked at Target and was promoted to supervisor the day he turned eighteen. That early vote of confidence stuck with him, fueling a lifelong passion for guiding others.

“I’ve always had this big brother energy,” he explains. “I want to help people grow, avoid the mistakes I’ve made, and get where they’re trying to go faster and with less pain.”

Over the years, he held management and executive positions at companies like Media Play, Borders, Mutual Bank, and Teachers Credit Union. And with almost uncanny consistency, he watched every company either go under or rebrand significantly. The changes were more than cosmetic. They often meant complete cultural shifts and a loss of the values and leadership approaches he believed in.

“Every time I poured myself into a team, it felt like the ground shifted beneath us,” he says. “It got to the point where I realized if I wanted to keep doing this work the way I believe it should be done, I’d have to do it on my own terms.”

That realization led to the launch of Rhino Consulting and Coaching, a business rooted in clarity, connection, and helping leaders lead with intention.

Playing to Your Strengths

One of the core principles of Rhino Consulting and Coaching is helping people recognize what their strengths are and showing them how to build around those strengths. Ryan uses DISC assessments to provide teams and individuals with language for how they communicate, make decisions, and handle pressure.

“Once people understand their natural wiring, everything starts to make more sense,” he says. “You see why someone prefers to work alone or why another person thrives on fast-paced decisions. It’s not about changing who they are. It’s about setting them up to win.”

This strengths-based approach has become a signature of Ryan’s work. He’s less interested in fixing weaknesses and more invested in helping clients align roles, responsibilities, and expectations in ways that make teams more cohesive and productive.

“I’ve had clients tell me they learned more in a 90-minute DISC session than they did in five years of working together,” he says.

Creating Culture That Works

Ryan’s work goes beyond personality tests. He facilitates deep conversations about company values, conflict resolution, and how to build a culture that people actually want to be part of.

That includes helping owners and managers get real about where things are falling short.

“I’ve sat in rooms with leadership teams where no one was talking to each other,” Ryan says. “People were burnt out, frustrated, and ready to leave. We started by identifying pain points, then got them talking about what was working, what wasn’t, and what everyone needed to do differently.”

Within weeks, the same team was collaborating more effectively and reporting less stress.

“It’s not magic,” he says. “It’s structure. And a willingness to stop and figure things out.”

From Team Building to 1:1 Coaching

While much of Ryan’s work focuses on teams, he also offers one-on-one coaching for business owners and organizational leaders. Sometimes that means helping a new manager build confidence. Other times, it’s guiding an overwhelmed CEO through a tough season.

“Business owners are often trying to do everything themselves,” he says. “But leadership doesn’t have to be lonely. Sometimes you just need a clear space to think, talk it out, and gain perspective.”

Ryan brings both empathy and structure to these coaching sessions. His years in the trenches give him credibility, and his approachable style puts people at ease.

Clients describe him as grounded, practical, and deeply invested in their success. Many say they leave sessions feeling lighter, clearer, and ready to take action.

Speaking, Facilitating, and Community Impact

In addition to consulting and coaching, Ryan is a dynamic speaker and workshop facilitator. He’s been invited to speak at conferences, corporate events, and community gatherings, often drawing on his own experiences to share lessons on leadership, burnout, and building healthy teams.

“Speaking gives me the chance to reach more people at once,” he says. “But whether I’m on stage or in a one-on-one session, the goal is the same. Help people understand themselves and each other better, so they can work together more effectively.”

He’s especially passionate about supporting local businesses and nonprofits, many of which are navigating growth, turnover, and leadership transitions. His clients include schools, financial institutions, healthcare organizations, and retail businesses across Michiana and beyond.

Why Rhino?

The name Rhino was intentional. It reflects Ryan’s belief in forward motion, strength, and resilience. Rhinos may not be flashy, but they are steady and powerful, exactly the kind of energy he brings to his work.

“I’m not here to impress anyone,” he says. “I’m here to help you figure out what’s working, what’s not, and how to move forward.”

And that’s what Rhino Consulting and Coaching is all about. It’s a space where leaders can pause, reflect, and grow. Where teams can reconnect and realign. Where people can rediscover the value they bring and learn how to share it more effectively with those around them.

Whether you’re a seasoned executive or a first-time manager, Ryan’s approach meets you where you are and helps you move forward with purpose.
