Dr. Lisa Meyers Brings Holistic Care to Active Health and Wellness Center
In a world where health often takes a backseat to busy schedules, Dr. Lisa Meyers is on a mission to bring wellness to the forefront. For her, chiropractic care is a way to restore balance, promote wellness, and empower patients to take charge of their health. As the owner of Active Health and Wellness Center in South Bend, Indiana, Dr. Meyers creates a welcoming space where healing and trust go hand in hand. She does this by blending advanced therapies, hands-on techniques, and patient education. Alongside her associate, Dr. Matt Blackmon, Dr. Meyers focuses on treating the whole person, making every patient visit more than an adjustment.
A Journey Rooted in Passion
Dr. Meyers was inspired by her uncle, who practiced chiropractic care, and she declared her desire to be a chiropractor in second grade. She was fueled by a mission to help heal people naturally, and she pursued that goal despite skepticism from the adults around her. “I liked the idea of helping people feel better by improving how their bodies work, rather than relying on medications or surgeries,” she explains.
After working in Indianapolis early in her career, Dr. Meyers joined Active Health and Wellness Center in 2000 as an associate. 15 years later, she took ownership of the practice, bringing her vision of personalized,patient-focused care to life. “I wanted to create a place where patients could feel truly cared for and where their time with us felt like a break from the stress of daily life,” she says.
Redefining Chiropractic Care
Active Health and Wellness Center stands out for its holistic, integrated approach. Instead of focusing solely on adjustments, Dr. Meyers and her team dedicate a full hour to each patient, tailoring treatments to address the root causes of pain and discomfort.
“When patients come to us, they’re usually in pain, so our job is to find the inflammation, figure out what’s causing it, and create a plan that helps them heal,” she explains. Patient education is a key part of her approach. “One of my core values is that the more a patient understands what is going on with them, the better they can fight it,” Dr. Meyers says. By helping patients understand their conditions and treatment plans, she empowers them to take an active role in their healing journey.
The team uses various techniques, including therapeutic manual massage, ultrasound therapy, and interferential current for inflammation and muscle spasms. Patients also learn exercises to improve posture and prevent future issues. “We focus on relieving pain and teaching techniques to keep it from returning,” she emphasizes.
Overcoming Challenges and Finding Balance
Owning the practice came with challenges Dr. Meyers didn’t anticipate. Managing payroll, navigating insurance, and running a business required her to step outside her comfort zone. The practice went from having three doctors to just one, and she had to restructure to keep up. With guidance from business and chiropractic coaches, she found her footing. “I’ve always been confident as a chiropractor, but learning the business side was a new challenge,” she admits.
In 2016, Dr. Meyers hit a turning point. Professionally, the year was a success, but personally, the demands were overwhelming. “I was charting at basketball games and working weekends,” she says. Encouraged by her husband, she took a week off, reevaluated her priorities, and made changes to help balance her family and work commitments. “I had to learn how to create boundaries to be able to give my best to my patients and my family,” she shares.
Healing Beyond the Spine
In addition to traditional chiropractic care, Active Health and Wellness Center recently expanded to treat peripheral neuropathy, a condition that often affects people with diabetes or those undergoing chemotherapy. The program combines therapies and supplements and has already delivered life-changing results, including for Dr. Meyers herself. “This is a whole new branch of care that we’re excited to grow,” she says. “It’s rewarding to offer solutions for conditions people are often told they just have to live with.”
Success stories from her patients are what fuel Dr. Meyers’ passion. Whether helping a farmer stand pain-free for the first time in years or recognizing a symptom that leads to a life-saving diagnosis, her focus is always on what’s best for the individual. “If there’s ever something outside my expertise, I’m not afraid to refer out,” she says. “What matters is that patients get the care they need, whether from me or someone else.”
Advice for Aspiring Practice Owners
Starting your practice can be incredibly rewarding, but it comes with challenges that go far beyond medical expertise. Dr. Meyers offers advice for those looking to follow a similar path: “You have to be ready to learn everything they don’t teach you in school,” she says. “Marketing, networking, and running a business are just as important as providing excellent care.”
She emphasizes stepping outside your comfort zone to grow your practice. “You need to attend networking meetings, get involved in things outside of work, and meet as many people as possible,” she explains. “You can’t wait for patients to come to you—you must actively educate the community about how your services can help them.”
As a chiropractor, Dr. Meyers faces a unique challenge: if she does her job well, her patients often won’t need to return for ongoing care. “That’s the goal—to help them get better and stay better,” she says. “But it also means there’s a continuous need to bring in new patients.”
Her advice is grounded in years of experience and a commitment to lifelong learning. “It’s not easy, but if you’re willing to put in the work, the rewards are absolutely worth it,” she adds.
Looking to the Future
Dr. Meyers envisions a future where Active Health and Wellness Center remains a trusted resource in the community. She hopes to grow the peripheral neuropathy side of the practice and support Dr. Blackmon as he works his way up in the clinic, continuing the clinic’s legacy of personalized, patient-first care.
“We go beyond treating symptoms by empowering patients to take control of their health,” Dr. Meyers says. “Our goal is to create lasting change so they feel better today, tomorrow, and years from now.”
