Steady in Uncertain Times How Business Owners Can Stay Steady in Uncertain Times

By Deb Ammerman

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the state of the world.

If you talk with other business owners, you can feel it almost immediately. There’s a quiet tension in the air. Conversations often turn to uncertainty—economic concerns, global events, technological change, and the constant stream of news that never seems to slow down.

Running a business has never been easy, but lately it can feel like the world itself is shifting beneath our feet.

To be honest, writing this article is as much for me as it is for you.

Sometimes the best way to deal with anxiety is to step back, reflect, and remind ourselves why we started in the first place. My hope is that putting these thoughts on paper will help me stay grounded—and maybe help a few other business owners feel the same way.

Entrepreneurs Carry a Unique Weight

When you own a business, you don’t just think about yourself.

You think about your customers.
You think about your employees.
You think about the families that depend on the work you create.

There are nights when business owners lie awake thinking about payroll, marketing, growth, and whether the decisions they’re making today will still make sense tomorrow.

It’s a responsibility that most people outside of entrepreneurship never fully see.

And during uncertain times, that responsibility can feel even heavier.

But Entrepreneurs Are Built for This

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that entrepreneurs are some of the most resilient people on the planet.

Every business owner I know has faced moments that felt impossible—slow seasons, financial pressure, unexpected setbacks, or major changes in the marketplace.

Yet somehow, we adapt.

We figure things out.

We find new ways to serve our customers and continue moving forward.

Entrepreneurs are natural problem-solvers. That ability to pivot, rethink, and innovate is one of the greatest strengths small businesses have.

Focusing on What We Can Control

One of the biggest sources of stress today comes from focusing on things outside our control.

Global news cycles run 24 hours a day. Predictions, opinions, and speculation are everywhere. It’s easy to get caught in that current and feel overwhelmed.

But when I step back, I try to remind myself of something simple:

I can’t control the world.
But I can control how I show up in it.

I can focus on serving my clients well.
I can work on improving what I’m building.
I can continue creating opportunities for others.

Small steps taken consistently can move a business forward, even when the larger world feels uncertain.

Small Businesses Matter More Than We Realize

Sometimes when we hear about the global economy or large corporations, it’s easy to forget just how important small businesses really are.

But small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities.

They create jobs.
They support local events and charities.
They bring personality and connection to the places where we live.

Every time a small business owner opens their doors, they are contributing something meaningful to the people around them.

The coffee shop that starts someone’s morning.
The service provider who solves a problem.
The local store that helps someone find the perfect gift.

These everyday interactions are powerful.

We Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Another thing I’ve learned through networking, business groups, and community organizations is that entrepreneurs are stronger together.

One conversation with another business owner can completely change your perspective.

Sometimes the best support comes from simply talking with someone who understands the journey—the ups, the downs, and the constant balancing act that entrepreneurship requires.

Community matters more than ever right now.

Writing This Helped Me Remember Something Important

As I sat down to write this article, I realized something.

Uncertainty has always existed.

Every generation of entrepreneurs has faced moments when the future felt unclear. Yet businesses continued to grow, communities continued to thrive, and new opportunities always emerged.

Entrepreneurs have always been part of the solution.

And the same spirit that built your business—and mine—is the same spirit that will carry us forward.

Moving Forward Together

If you’re feeling the weight of uncertainty right now, you’re not alone.

Many business owners are navigating the same questions and concerns.

But I believe this:

Entrepreneurs are builders.
We create solutions.
We bring ideas to life.

Every day we show up, help someone, solve a problem, or create value, we are contributing to a stronger future.

And sometimes simply reminding ourselves of that is enough to steady our steps.

Writing this helped me do exactly that.

I hope it helps you too.
